The Saint Mary Parish School Board on Nov. 13 formally canvassed the returns of an Oct. 11 special election and adopted an ordinance to levy a renewed 0.45% sales and use tax for school purposes.
A staff member presenting the canvass told the board the election "passed by a vote of 2,598 in favor versus 559 against for an approval rate of 82%." The board approved a resolution to canvass the returns by roll call vote, recorded as nine yays, zero nos and two absences.
The board then adopted an ordinance to levy the same 0.45% tax so collections would continue without interruption. District staff said the parish sales tax collector had reviewed and confirmed the ordinance. Doctor Wilson moved to adopt the ordinance; Miss Jones seconded. The roll call showed nine yeses, zero nos and two absent.
Board members and staff described the steps as routine technical actions following voter approval rather than a new tax: the presenter emphasized this was a renewal of an existing levy. There were no public comments during the canvass or ordinance adoption.
The resolution and ordinance implement the voters' renewal approved Oct. 11 and allow the parish to continue collecting the 0.45% sales and use tax for school purposes.
