At the meeting, Judy Ulmer addressed the commission during public comment to raise concerns about proposed wireless towers linked in the discussion to Tlingit Haida projects.
Ulmer, identifying herself as a local resident, told the commission she is “here for myself and the concerns of so many people” and urged caution because existing borough ordinances may not cover rapid advances in wireless technology. She warned that towers planned for Rory Road could sit “just 50 feet from [a house],” said one resident with a pacemaker was worried about potential effects, and pointed to other communities (Wrangell and Sitka) where she said towers had been sited every one to two miles. “I just urge you to be careful, be watchful, and do what you can do individually and as a group,” she said.
Vice Chair Heather (speaker 4) then used a non-agenda comment to say she previously voted to recommend the sale of Burrell land for a Tlingit Bridal Tower at the assembly but said she had a “change of heart” after attending an October 20 assembly meeting and signed Ms. Ulmer’s letter of concern. Heather brought that reversal to the commission record during non-agenda comments.
Staff and commissioners discussed procedural items after the comments, including packet formatting improvements; no formal planning-code changes or new tower regulations were introduced at this meeting.
