Commission hears community resource roundup as SNAP pause raises food-security concerns

Staff presented a compiled list of local food-security partners and community events and encouraged commissioners and the public to donate or volunteer in response to reports that SNAP benefits may be temporarily disrupted.
"Governor Kotek today announced a food emergency in relation to the impending SNAP benefits being paused," Commissioner Jen Kovetz said, urging commissioners to direct community members to available resources and to consider financial donations to local providers.
Staff noted a recent Barry Washington Jr. memorial and listed upcoming community programming, including a Dia de Muertos celebration in downtown Bend on Nov. 7, tribal learning series and Native American Heritage Month events organized by COCC and community partners. The city is coordinating with internal staff and external partners to centralize resource lists, and staff said they will circulate the meeting presentation and follow-up emails with event details.
Commissioners offered to help with letters of support, volunteer coordination and targeted outreach (transportation to food banks and referrals). One commissioner volunteered to help directly with single mothers affected by benefit disruptions.
