Wayzata board moves high school event-worker pay to annual supplemental schedule, approves 2% increase

The Wayzata Public Schools Board of Education approved on Oct. 27 moving high school event-worker pay rates (previously in Appendix D of the WEA contract) to an annually reviewed supplemental pay schedule and authorized a 2% increase for the 2025–26 school year. The motion was made by Board member Dan Genestra and seconded by Board member Sarah Johansen; Heidi Kader conducted the roll call.
Administration, represented by Dave Lutz, said the activities director and negotiators agreed that annual board approval of event-worker rates allows the district to be more responsive to budget and program needs than embedding those hourly rates in a two-year teachers’ contract. "I want the flexibility to recommend rate changes on an annual basis of the board and of the ability to be responsive to budgets," Lutz said.
The recommended 2% increase for 2025–26 aligns with the extracurricular increase contained in the newly approved WEA contract for that year, administration said. The supplemental schedule change and the rate update will be administered by the WHS activities department and reviewed as part of the district’s annual budget process.
Board member Valentina Ayres raised a related disclosure about past union endorsements; the chair and other trustees directed that discussion to be limited to the current agenda item. The roll-call vote was unanimous among members present: Yes — Sarah Johansen, Paras Bende, Heidi Kader, Valentina Ayres, Dan Genestra, Milan Sahoney (6); Absent — Sheila Pryor (1). The motion carried.
The board’s action separates event-worker pay decisions from the multi-year teachers’ contract so rates can be adjusted annually at the board’s discretion.
