Board honors student artists from elementary to high school

The Santa Cruz Valley Unified District governing board opened its Oct. 28 meeting by recognizing student artists from district schools.
Lourdes Vasquez, board president, invited school principals to introduce students who had won awards. At the elementary level, board members recognized Sebastian Pacheco, who won "best of show." A principal said Sebastian "puts a smile on my face every time I see him," and trustees praised his inventiveness and craftsmanship.
Rio Rico High School and other secondary programs were also honored. Presenters described work that had been damaged by weather and highlighted a graphic design piece reproduced for display. High school students Yaya, Christian and Emily were noted for mural work, portraiture and innovative uses of materials; staff said Emily' paints were used on aprons and tortilla warmers for an upcoming conference.
Board members and principals emphasized the value of arts instruction and congratulated teachers and families for supporting students. Trustees took photos with the students and commended their teachers for mentorship and skill development. Padilla and other administrators noted multiple district winners at the ASI Ellis conference and said the recognition highlights district arts programming.
No board action was required for recognitions; the segment was used to publicly acknowledge students, teachers and parent support.
