Sumter County Council gave first reading to a resolution designating a prospective industry, referred to at the meeting as “Project Peanut,” that staff said plans to invest about $38 million in the county and create 47 full-time jobs.
A county staff presenter said the resolution is largely a recognition that allows the prospective company to pursue project-related expenditures and gives the county authority to negotiate a fee-in-lieu/tax agreement and other transactional documents once terms are available. The staff presentation made clear that the final fee agreement and a purchase-sale exhibit (referred to as Exhibit B) were not yet available for review.
The resolution also contemplates including the project site in Butler County Park and Sunproley Industrial Park as part of the county’s economic development framework; staff said those site and transaction details will be negotiated before any final agreement is executed.
Council approved first reading of the resolution. Staff will return to council with the negotiated fee agreement, purchase-sale documents and any formal tax-incentive materials for further consideration.
