Hillcrest honored for disability-awareness work; staff and student recognitions spotlighted

The Marion County School Board opened its Oct. 28 meeting with a recognition of Hillcrest School in observance of Disability Awareness Month and presentations honoring staff and students.
Lloyd Manresa and Cindy Lowe of Hillcrest introduced Teacher of the Year Anita Hendry and Rookie Teacher of the Year Stephanie Stevens. Staff highlighted Hillcrest—s programming, including an art program launched after a referendum, work-study and community-recognition opportunities and student participation in Special Olympics.
Interim Superintendent Danielle Brewer invited Hillcrest staff to lead the meeting—s inspiration and pledge. Hillcrest leaders emphasized inclusion and said disability awareness instruction and accommodations help students participate with dignity.
The board also recognized Pam Pickens, an attendance specialist in the district—s mental-health and wellness department, for re-engaging a homeschooled student, Makai, and helping him complete eighth-grade credits and return on track for a diploma. Pickens and the student spoke briefly; the board and staff presented a formal recognition.
Board members later noted that House Bill 447 has been codified as Florida Statute 1003.4205, requiring disability-history and awareness instruction during October, and said they will align district policy and instruction accordingly.
