At the end of its Oct. 28 meeting, the Marion County School Board heard a request from Reverend Eric Cummings asking the board to adopt a formal statement opposing an application by Track Line Rail LLC to store, shred, grind or dispose of creosote-treated railroad ties in the Chatmira neighborhood near the Rainbow River.
Reverend Cummings described public-health and environmental risks, said the material sits adjacent to family homes and a historically Black neighborhood, and noted Donnellan city council had voted unified opposition. He asked the school board to transmit a similar position to state agencies and the county commission.
Attorney Jeremy Powers said he would prepare a draft resolution that mirrors other local entities—language and staff aimed to have a draft ready for board review as soon as possible, potentially at the next work session. Board members present signaled support for preparing formal opposition. The county commission had scheduled the matter on its upcoming agenda; city and county officials had previously raised concerns about stockpiled creosote-treated ties and potential runoff into the Rainbow River.
The board did not adopt a resolution at the Oct. 28 meeting but directed attorney Powers to draft language for review and signature.
