The council approved a parks purchase on Oct. 28 not to exceed $132,002.76 for holiday decorations from Dectra Light to outfit City Hall, Heritage Park, Triangle Park and downtown entryways.
Parks Director Heather Dowell told council the city will own the decorations, staff will install and store them, and a new park storage building is under construction with high cages for forklift storage. Staff said outdoor ornaments may last about five years (rotating to avoid sun fade), while the interior City Hall tree is warranted for 10 years and may last up to 15 years with proper storage and maintenance. Several elements are intended for multiple seasonal uses, including Fourth of July stars and frames for other events.
Council questions focused on ownership, storage capacity, life expectancy and whether the purchase fully supports future gateway decorations. Staff said the purchase was budgeted and will provide significant downtown decorations for many years; council approved the purchase 6–0.
