Board approves UniSIG-funded tutoring contract for three elementary schools

Marion County School Board approved a contract with Tutors Who Care to provide targeted math and English language-arts tutoring at Oakcrest, Stanton Weresdale and Wamina Park elementary schools, funded through the Unified School Improvement Grant (UniSIG).
The Marion County School Board on Oct. 28 approved a standard agreement with Tutors Who Care Corporation to provide after-school tutoring in math and English language arts at Oakcrest Elementary, Stanton Weresdale and Wamina Park Elementary, with the board voting 5-0 to authorize the contract.
Ben Whitehouse, who introduced the item, said Tutors Who Care employs current or former teachers and will deliver 90-minute sessions one to two times per week. Students will be selected by school administrators based on FAST (Florida Assessment of Student Thinking) data. Expected outcomes cited by staff include gains on standardized assessments, improved attendance and improved behavior.
Interim Superintendent Danielle Brewer told the board the agreement lists a September start date because of timing through the contracting process; staff said services will begin once the agreement is fully executed.
The funding source for the contract is the Unified School Improvement Grant (UniSIG), and the contract will proceed following state budget approval of UniSIG plans for the schools.
