Mount Shasta proclaims Nov. 12 as Read Across day; First 5 describes playgroups and outreach

Karen Platt, representing First 5 Siskiyou, told the council about weekly playgroups and family events and invited council members to serve as guest readers for Read Across on Nov. 12.
Platt said First 5 has offered 16 weekly playgroups in Mount Shasta since July, serving 177 parents and 192 children, and has partnered on seven family‑fun events that drew 567 families. “Our hope is that not only First 5 and our wonderful partners...but also our city council” will participate, Platt said.
Pamela Newman, who identified herself as a Mount Shasta resident and small business employer, spoke in support of First 5 programs and their role in early literacy.
Council read and adopted a city proclamation endorsing daily reading, singing and play as a foundation for early development and designated Nov. 12, 2025, as the 18th annual Read Across day in Mount Shasta. Mayor John Redmond signed the proclamation on the council’s behalf.
The action was ceremonial and does not authorize funding or program changes; First 5 representatives asked council members to consider participating as guest readers and to visit playgroups to learn about community needs.
