Maryland math policy to change CCPS schedules, course pathways and family notification; district outlines phased implementation

Charles County Public Schools on Oct. 27 briefed the board on Maryland27s newly issued PreK2012 mathematics policy and how the district plans to implement the policy over the next several years.
District leaders described key policy elements: daily core math instruction of 60 minutes for K8, embedded tiered interventions (MTSS) within that block, and an automatic planning process for acceleration when students achieve the highest proficiency level on state assessments. Middle-school schedules will move toward an 84-minute daily math block (core plus embedded tiered instruction), and high schools will plan daily double-period algebra blocks so interventions and acceleration can be provided without tracking students away from grade-level instruction.
