Commission hears calls to address food security, housing and mainland connectivity in comp-plan review

Speakers and commissioners used the work session to raise several persistent, substantive local needs: food security and food-systems planning; partner-led housing and food assistance programs; and longer-range transportation connections to the mainland.
A public commenter and commission members underscored food-insecurity concerns and asked the commission to consider adding a community food-security or food-systems plan to the comprehensive plan's implementation or partner-led actions. Staff agreed to research case studies and draft action language for the Nov. 12 meeting.
Commissioners discussed partner-led housing and food assistance as possible supports but expressed concern about naming a single organization in the plan. The planning staff agreed to craft broader language that would encourage support for local efforts without limiting eligibility to a named entity.
Members of the public also raised connectivity to the mainland (ferry, road/bridge or other alternatives) as a long-term strategic consideration. Commissioners asked staff to prepare inclusive language on strengthening marine and interisland connectivity and possible mainland linkages that could be reviewed alongside other infrastructure priorities in November.
