Committee confirms reappointment to Historic Preservation Commission and appoints library trustee

Dennis McConnell was reappointed to the Historic Preservation Commission as the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association representative. In his remarks he described approximately "60 years experience building houses" and said he approaches reviews with "common sense," using Druid Hills as an example of fitting new construction into a historic context. Commissioners asked about balancing preservation with growth and about acting in a quasi-judicial capacity during HPC appeals; McConnell said decisions should be based on stated legal tests and factual evidence rather than opinions.
The committee also appointed Mike Cooper to Post 6 on the DeKalb County Public Library Board of Trustees. Cooper described his long involvement with libraries, including 25 years with the Friends of the Stone Mountain-Suwanee-Kellogg branch and participation on a previous county library strategic plan steering committee. Commissioners asked about evolving library roles, technology adoption and Brookhaven branch planning; Cooper said library locations and integration with other services are decisions for the library system and municipal partners.
Both appointments were approved by voice vote and will be forwarded to the full board for final action.
