Road commissioner cautions that higher state funding may be offset by rising contractor and equipment costs

The Van Buren County road commissioner updated the Board of Commissioners—Committee of the Whole on Oct. 28, describing a busy season of seal coating, facility maintenance and the need to prepare for possible increases in state road funding.

The commissioner said the county completed a large amount of seal coating this year and noted it helped extend pavement life. He described recent facility investments, including new roofs at county road buildings and a near-complete remodel at the western facility, and said the commission saved money by remodeling rather than building a new facility.

On state funding, the commissioner summarized recent legislative proposals that would increase road funding and noted uncertainty about final amounts and legal challenges to parts of the funding package. He warned local officials that additional revenue could be met by higher contractor bids and equipment costs. "Whatever we see at increase revenue is gonna be faced with the increase of cost of [projects]," he said, adding that the county is evaluating equipment purchases and contractor capacity so it can spend any new funds effectively.

He also described intercounty coordination on best practices for fog-seal and seal-coating processes, and noted ongoing operational topics such as mowing, staffing and recruitment. Commissioners asked for follow up on how any new state money would be allocated and how contractors and project timelines might be affected.
