The Los Angeles City Council recognized rapper, spoken-word artist and filmmaker Ruby Ibarra during a presentation on Filipino American History Month.
Councilmember Isabel Jurado introduced Ibarra and praised her multilingual performances and community leadership. Jurado said Ibarra's work "tells the story of who Filipinos are" and cited the artist's Tiny Desk recognition.
Ibarra told the council she is "a proud Filipino American artist" whose music is tied to community, identity and representation. She said her nonprofit and label work, including Bolo Music Group and the Panay's Rising scholarship program, aim to support Filipino American musicians and students.
The council presented Ibarra with a ceremonial certificate recognizing her artistic leadership. The item was a ceremonial presentation and did not include policy action.
