District presents comprehensive counseling plan; Allen highlights college fair, HBCU outreach and partnerships

Nicole Allen, assistant superintendent for student support services, presented the Sewanhaka district's comprehensive counseling plan, a New York State-required document the district uses to coordinate advisement, college and career programming, social-emotional supports, and attendance interventions across all five high schools.
Allen said the counseling plan is informed by the district's "portrait of a graduate" and covers scheduling and advisement (Infinite Campus and a district course catalog), grade-level meetings, child-study teams, 504 and CSE processes, and targeted interventions. Allen told the board the district offered its college and career fair on Sept. 30 with more than 100 colleges, military and trade representatives and that about 92 percent of 11th graders sat for the PSAT on Oct. 14. She said the district administered roughly 4,000 AP exams last year (figure stated during the presentation).
On postsecondary access, Allen described dual-enrollment offerings tied to specific partner colleges and said the district is scheduling college tours, on-site admissions and expanded HBCU outreach after targeted outreach this year. "We had more HBCUs at our college fair this year than we probably ever had," Allen said, crediting outreach by district staff and community partners. The district also plans an HBCU-focused program and a November trip to a Riverside HBCU college fair.
Allen described behavioral and mental health partnerships with Northwell Health and a new telehealth partner, Cartwheel Health, which she said provides clinicians in multiple languages. She noted measures of program success include attendance data, participation in counseling, parent engagement, and graduation data (district graduation rates were described as above the state average).
Allen said the district plans to convene a Student Support Services Advisory Board in 2026 to evaluate and refine counseling offerings with stakeholders.
