The Catawba County Board of Education voted Oct. 27 to rename Catawba Rosenwald Education Center to North Star Academy and adopt the phoenix as the school mascot. District staff said the change followed input from students, staff and community members and that the new name and behavioral/instructional matrix will launch next year according to the building plan.
Dr. Matthew Stover and board members also presented a recommendation from Lisle Creek Elementary School to name that school's media center after Dr. Leslie Barnett in recognition of her 42 years of service to district students and staff and for her later service on the school board. The motion to approve the media-center naming passed after the school and board provided permission.
Board members emphasized the district solicited stakeholder input for the renaming and that the building will continue to use its existing name until the move occurs per the current construction schedule.
Proper names: Catawba County Schools; Catawba Rosenwald Education Center (current name); North Star Academy (new name); Lisle Creek Elementary School; Dr. Leslie Barnett.
What happens next: The district will update materials and implement the renaming and dedication according to the approved building plan and school permissions.
