Liberty County sheriff outlines phased jail repairs, court accepts update

The Liberty County Sheriff provided a detailed update Oct. 28 on fire restoration and related repairs at the county jail, saying contractors have nearly completed painting and ceiling-light replacement in the West End and that the floor has been prepared for final finishing.
The sheriff told the Commissioners Court that installation of expanded metal is on hold until HVAC and intercom systems are installed and approved, and that HVAC bids were scheduled to arrive the evening of Oct. 28 with a committee recommendation to follow. He said door-lock dry-fit work was scheduled to begin Oct. 27 and that additional locks would be delivered in early December and in January. Wrong fire hoses had been delivered earlier and the correct hoses were pending delivery.
"The contractors that I've met . . . said that they could get it done within 30 days or so," the sheriff said, adding the work proceeds in phases and that the West End could be completed "by the end of the year" if parts and access line up.
Commissioners asked whether the next phase would require the same sequence of HVAC, locks and intercom work for the East End; the sheriff said the HVAC quote would be for the whole facility and the work would be phased to allow reopening portions of the jail as they are completed.
The court made a motion to accept the sheriffs report. Commissioner Gerald moved to accept; Commissioner Greg seconded. The court approved the information report by voice vote.
