Housing board authorizes PayPal and dedicated bank account for donations

At its Oct. 28 meeting the Block Island Housing Board voted to authorize the town treasurer to set up a PayPal account so the board can receive online or electronic donations. The board also voted to authorize the treasurer to open a dedicated bank account at Washington Trust for funds received through PayPal, Stripe, Square or similar gateways.
Board members said the treasurer requested the explicit vote to put a clear authorization on the record. A member asked whether electronic platforms were safe; the board noted that PayPal is considered more business-friendly than peer-to-peer apps and that the board could switch platforms if the chosen service did not work well.
Actions on Oct. 28 formalize what the board had discussed previously; the board instructed the treasurer to proceed with account setup and to report back if any problems arise.
