City highlights October projects; public meetings set for proposed police station near Madera Elementary

Sherry Fuller, the city’s public information officer, presented the October progress report covering parks, public works, library, police and event activity.

Fuller said playground replacements were completed at Indian Hills, Pioneer Park and Sarah Renee Park; pool filter work and a shade structure layout were underway at Hillcrest Aquatic Center; and forestry crews planned to plant approximately 250 trees before year‑end. A prescribed burn at Dakota Nature Park proceeded as planned with fire and parks staff and volunteer firefighter support.

Public works updates included completion of the 2025 asphalt maintenance project punch list, progress on Arrowhead Park drainage improvements, paving and sewer work on 30 Second Avenue and Capitol Street, and construction on phases of the 20th Street South shared‑use path.

Fuller said the Dakota Bank Center hosted eight event days in October, including a Pink Ladies’ Dart Tournament that drew 2,652 attendees, and listed upcoming events including a PRCA rodeo, a monster truck show and a concert by Chicago in mid‑November. The library’s Friends group raised about $9,000 at a fall book sale and gifted nearly $13,000 to support programming and collections.

Fuller announced two community meetings on Monday, Nov. 3 at Brookings High School regarding proposed plans for a new police station near Madera Elementary. Sessions are 4–6 p.m. (presentation at 4:30) and 6–8 p.m. (presentation at 6:30). Fuller said materials are available on the city website and social media.

Mayor and council members encouraged public attendance at the police facility meetings and noted the planning process is an early step in a longer project.
