The Board of Selectmen authorized two on‑call per‑diem positions at the town transfer station on Oct. 20 to address chronic understaffing and intermittent employee leave.
Dennis (transfer station management) told the board that relying on two full‑time employees left the facility vulnerable when staff take vacation or medical leave. The board agreed to expand a roster of per‑diem employees who can be called as needed; per‑diems may be asked to obtain required solid‑waste or weight‑master certifications if they will work in those roles.
Selectman Kyle volunteered to join the per‑diem roster. The board approved hiring Kyle to the per‑diem roster; Kyle recused himself from that vote. The board also authorized the town administrator (TJ) and the transfer‑station manager to hire an additional per‑diem employee to fill the second authorized spot.
Board members said the per‑diem roster provides staffing flexibility and avoids the added municipality costs associated with creating new full‑time positions.
