Depew board approves standard agenda items, signs Stop DWI contract and schedules CDBG projects; executive session held

The Village of Depew Board of Trustees voted on a slate of routine and programmatic items during its Oct. 27 meeting, including authorizing the mayor to sign a Stop DWI contract with Erie County and approving Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) subrecipient agreements for sidewalk improvements and a playground renovation.
The board approved minutes from the Sept. 22 and Oct. 14, 2025 meetings; accepted planning-board minutes from Oct. 2; and recorded planning-board actions including a Brunswick rezone and a special-use permit for a cannabis dispensary at Transit Road (Item 26061). Trustees unanimously authorized Mayor Kevin J. Peterson to sign the Stop DWI contract with Erie County, citing the police chief's remarks about the program's role in reducing impaired-driving incidents.
Trustees also voted to authorize the mayor to sign an amendment to the Upstate Tower Company LLC lease to provide additional space for emergency services equipment in exchange for a modest revenue reduction. The board approved a Firefly agreement for LOSAP administration (moving to quarterly reports), appointed Samuel A. Alba as backup prosecutor pursuant to Village Law §4-400, and proclaimed Oct. 31, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. as the village's official trick-or-treat period in coordination with Cheektowaga.
On funding and personnel, trustees authorized two CDBG subrecipient agreements: sidewalk improvements and senior-center expenses on the Cheektowaga side of the village, and a playground improvement project at 90 South James Street (Lancaster side) for up to $150,000 administered through Erie County. The board approved longevity payments for listed nonunion employees (amounts read into the record) and accepted the resignation of Deputy Emergency Manager RJ Neiman, effective Nov. 1, 2025; colleagues delivered remarks recognizing his 14 years of service.
The board granted routine permissions and appointments including membership for William Kidder in the Depew Volunteer Fire Department (pending physical), permission for multiple fire-department training exercises and Halloween activities, a waiver of a sign-permit fee for Smokin' Little Diner to support an AMVETS fundraiser, and appointment of John Deck as a part-time court officer effective Oct. 29, 2025. Claims and accounts totaling $553,168.23 were approved as presented by the finance committee.
The board entered executive session at 8:00 p.m. to discuss a labor matter and returned at 8:26 p.m.; the mayor stated no decisions were made in executive session. The meeting adjourned at 8:27 p.m.
