Board renews partnership with Advise Texas to keep advisers in PSJA high schools

The PSJA board on Oct. 27 approved a memorandum of understanding to continue the district’s partnership with Advise Texas (College Advice Corps), which places college advisers in high schools to help students and families with college search, applications and financial aid.
Dr. Uribe, executive officer for college and career readiness, told trustees PSJA has partnered with Advise Texas for 15 years and is the only district in the Rio Grande Valley participating in the program. Each of the district’s four comprehensive high schools — PSJA High, PSJA Southwest, PSJA North and PSJA Memorial — would have an adviser; total program costs are $40,000, with the district covering $10,000 per adviser from college transition funds and the system covering the remainder.
Advisers lead one‑on‑one and group sessions, support SAT/ACT and FAFSA completion, coordinate college visits and collaborate with counselors to boost college‑going rates and support first‑generation and underrepresented students, Dr. Uribe said. Trustees asked whether specialized campuses (T‑STEM, Collegiate) or students on other campuses would receive support; staff said college‑and‑career staff and financial‑aid officers on specialty campuses provide services and that Advise Texas advisers supplement but do not replace campus counselors.
A motion to approve the MOU passed unanimously.
