Council declines additional High Street pole pending repairs; member, chief to inspect area

Dominic DiPietro asked the council on Oct. 22 to add a streetlight at pole number 22 on High Street between State and Bradford streets, citing dark conditions near the school and playground. Captain Roman Wasney and town staff reviewed CAD/RMS calls and reported no trend of service calls tied to poor lighting in that immediate area; they also noted a nonfunctioning streetlight at pole 21 (281 High St.) that DPW has reported for repair.
Director Diane (DPW) recommended denying the new-light request because existing pole spacing and adjacent private-property lighting met standard spacing and because the inoperable pole is scheduled for repair. Councilor Mary recounted walking the area and described it as "incredibly dark," urging a broader review of lighting along High Street.
Council accepted department recommendations that the inoperable light be repaired first and voted to send a letter of thanks to staff; Councilman Perella and the chief agreed to walk the neighborhood with the petitioner to make a physical assessment. The council did not adopt a policy change or add a new lighting pole at this meeting.
