Oak Ridge Schools reports 358 students in fall intersession; enrollment down eight since May

Oak Ridge Schools staff reported that 358 students participated in fall intersession programs across district schools and provided summarized highlights of activities, field trips and partnerships during the board's information session.
Miss Van Dyke said Glenwood students 'traveled the world' with prehistoric-themed hands-on work and a trip to the McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture; Willowbrook hosted rotations led by engineers from Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) including microscopes, neutron scattering demonstrations and vacuum chamber activities; Woodland students conducted sensory experiments and built acorn villages; Robertsville students toured a UPS facility and visited Home Depot to apply engineering design principles; and high school students received ACT boot camp instruction and worked on coursework.
On enrollment, staff reported the district was down eight students overall compared with May 28. The presenter said some students were moved out of Skyward when they were enrolled in special service or nonattendance schools (for special education services provided off-site), and Linden had some student movement as well. The district noted localized enrollment growth at some schools even as the overall figure declined slightly.
Attendance reporting for the August 25–September 22 reporting period showed most schools meeting their goals. Jefferson Middle School was runner-up in the schools contest and Oak Ridge Preschool was the top school for attendance in the reporting period. Staff attendance was noted as 39% perfect attendance for the month of September; maintenance and operations were the top-performing department for staff attendance.
The board expressed appreciation for principals and staff who ran intersession and for teachers who provided fall-break learning opportunities. No formal action was taken; the reports were presented for information.
