During the public-comment portion of the Oct. 27 Waynesboro City Council meeting, Amina Abdul said her property tax had increased by $2.64 per month after refinancing and that she was being charged a penalty related to vehicle tax paperwork she believes she filed but which the commissioner's office says it did not receive.
Abdul told council she had tried to contact the commissioner of the revenue and asked whether there is a way to escalate the issue. The mayor replied that the commissioner's office is an elected position outside the council's direct authority but offered to reach out and follow up if Abdul provided contact information after the meeting.
Abdul said she worried taxes were rising generally and that she wanted assurance the paperwork error could be resolved; council offered to assist with communication but did not direct a formal investigation during the meeting.
