Parks and Recreation said the new flooring will enable a wider range of programs and make spaces accessible for fitness classes and senior activities; the presentation listed a parks budget allocation of approximately $150,821.54 to cover materials, demolition and installation.
At the same meeting Parks and Recreation presented a larger redesign proposal for senior programming that would add lounge furniture, computer stations, water features and a vendor cafe, and would extend the redesign into the Marquette Room. Senior staff said the project was developed with input from rec-board members and seniors who tested furniture samples.
Election‑space concern and next step: Several council members, including Councilwoman Banks, raised substantive concerns about the Marquette Room’s current and historic role in the clerk’s election operations — testing and training voting equipment, and storing secure election materials during major election cycles. Because the Marquette Room is used for extended election‑related activities, council asked administration to identify alternative secured space on the municipal campus (administration suggested lower‑level rooms and emergency‑management space as options) before the senior redesign proceeds.
Consequences for project timing: Staff said multiple vendor quotes expire Oct. 29 and asked council to proceed to avoid cost escalations. Council directed staff to seek short extensions from bidders and return to the Committee of the Whole on Nov. 10 with a recommended secured location for election operations and a revised schedule. The pavilion carpet purchase was approved and will proceed independent of the Marquette Room decision.
