Consultant Chris, who led the presentation, said the recommendations are intended to help users “know when we’ve arrived” in downtown Meridian and to change driver and pedestrian behavior in ways that support safety and commerce. “This is a different place, and therefore, our behavior ought to change as well,” Chris said, describing major north–south gateway markers, smaller east–west treatments and pedestrian-focused connections.
Why it matters: Councilmembers flagged that design, activation and funding decisions could affect the downtown’s competitiveness with nearby developments such as The Village. The plan’s recommend-ations — including a Festival Street concept and targeted lighting, shade and public-art projects — are meant to be phased and to leverage partnerships among the city, the Meridian Chamber, the Meridian Development Corporation (MDC) and private property owners.
