Davis County opens volunteer-run warming center; Syracuse officials urge volunteers and offer limited police transport support

Council members received an update on Davis County’s winter homeless response. Staff said the county purchased a building in Clearfield — described in the meeting as a recently acquired, upgraded facility near Main Street and the city hall area — that will be used for code-blue warming-center operations.
The county-run center will be volunteer staffed with three shifts per night and seeks volunteer help from Syracuse residents. Staff noted one of the statutory changes this year removes a county requirement to operate regular shuttle pickup routes; the county’s plan this season does not include mandated bus transport and instead expects volunteers and other outreach methods to connect people to the warming center.
The county said the shelter will accept one pet per person, recognizing that many people will not seek shelter if they must leave animals behind. Council members asked whether law enforcement could transport individuals who voluntarily agree to go; the chief of police said officers are willing to transport people who elect to go to the center when time permits.
Staff asked council members to encourage volunteers and community support, noting the facility could provide additional services such as connections to housing and behavioral-health resources.
