Lemont schedules environmental commission meeting with Citgo amid resident complaints about odors and fence‑line data

The Village of Lemont administrator and police chief reported ongoing outreach to Citgo after residents raised odor and emission concerns at recent meetings. Village staff said Citgo will be invited to the Environmental Commission meeting on Nov. 20 to present data and answer resident questions.

George (village administrator) said staff and the mayor have relayed resident concerns to Citgo and that Citgo is preparing responses. He said the village and police chief are arranging a virtual meeting with Illinois EPA officials to better understand notification protocols — specifically who is notified when equipment malfunctions or flaring events occur and when the village and residents should expect alerts.

Chief Lococo and Mayor Johnny Gavsky said the Environmental Commission chair, Brian Renke, can access citizen odor call logs and IEPA fence‑line monitoring data, and that the commission will review those datasets with Citgo to provide context. Staff noted that some fence‑line monitoring data may be several months old and that interpreting parts‑per‑billion levels requires technical context.

Residents at the meeting asked whether the village had filed FOIA requests or taken other formal steps. Robert Peterson asked whether the village had submitted FOIA requests to the IEPA, Romeoville Township or Will County regarding Citgo emissions. George said staff are in active conversation with Citgo and the IEPA and will pursue the follow‑up steps needed to respond to residents’ questions.

The village scheduled the Environmental Commission meeting for Nov. 20 and urged residents to submit specific questions and data points they want the commission and Citgo to address.
