Staff proposes restoring public works director role to provide oversight of airport functions

A town staff member told the commission the current budget planning will include a proposal to reinstate a public works/public services director to provide centralized oversight of several municipal services, including the airport.
"One of the things that I'm gonna talk about [in] the budget cycle this year is bringing back the public works public services director," the staff member said, noting the position would oversee parks, highways, wastewater, the transfer station and special projects. The staff member said the town previously had such a position but it has been vacant for multiple years.
Commissioners discussed current stipend arrangements and the possibility of using existing stipends to contribute to a new director's compensation. A commissioner noted that the airport manager stipend had previously been increased, and others discussed whether a retiree with airport experience might accept a modest annual supplement. Commissioners emphasized they want a candidate with public works experience if the position is restored.
No final budget decision was made in the Oct. 27 meeting. The staff member said the proposal will go through the town's appointed and elected budget processes; the commission may have further input if the position is included in the proposed budget.
