Summary
The utilities committee approved a professional services agreement with Hazen & Sawyer to design plans and specifications for the Furnace Street water tower improvement project. The work includes interior and exterior painting, safety upgrades and a static mixing system to improve water quality; the agreement is authorized not to exceed $163,500.
The Utilities Committee voted Oct. 27 to authorize a professional services agreement with Hazen & Sawyer for design of the Furnace Street water tower improvement project.
Engineer Schneider told the committee the scope includes painting the interior and exterior of the tank, safety improvements, and water‑quality improvements including a static mixing system that uses the plant pumping action rather than a mechanical mixer. The intent is to address both aesthetics and operational performance of the tower.
Schneider said the contract for design services is not to exceed $163,500. Committee members clarified the scope and the tank identity (Schneider noted the item concerns the Furnace Street tower; Murray Ridge was being painted separately by the same contractor). An emergency clause was requested in the ordinance authorizing the mayor to sign the agreement.
A motion to authorize the mayor to enter the Hazen & Sawyer agreement not to exceed $163,500 passed by voice vote.
