Board preview: draft 2026–27 YCSD calendar favors earlier start, shorter summer for many respondents

Staff presented a draft 2026–27 school calendar that meets Virginia statutory instructional-hour requirements and reflects stakeholder survey preferences to start two weeks before Labor Day (Aug. 24) and end June 9; 59% of survey respondents preferred the earlier start option.
Dr. Erin Butler and Lisa Beasley presented the draft 2026–27 school calendar and survey results at the Oct. 27 work session.
Butler said the calendar complies with Virginia Code requirements for a minimum of 180 instructional days or 990 hours and the statutory instructional-hour thresholds for course credit in high school and specified hours at middle and elementary levels. The board heard that, under a 2019 amendment to state law, divisions that could not previously start before Labor Day may now begin up to 14 calendar days before Labor Day under specified conditions.
The division surveyed stakeholders and received 2,245 responses: roughly 65% from York County families, 18% from staff, 11% from employees with children in the system and 4% from students. The calendar committee presented two options: Option A (start Aug. 24, end June 9) and Option B (start Aug. 31, end June 16). Committee members reported 59% of respondents preferred Option A. The committee also recommended maintaining a two-week winter break and aligning certain breaks regionally to accommodate programs such as Governor's School and New Horizons.
Butler said the full draft calendar will be posted in board documents and that the board is scheduled to consider the calendar for approval at the Nov. 24 regular meeting. A board member asked whether Yorktown Day might be made a student holiday for the 250th anniversary; staff said local officials planned major events on the preceding weekend, so the committee did not recommend adding a Yorktown Day holiday to the calendar.
