Bob Brischette, president of the nonprofit Don't Make Waste Bandera, addressed the council during public comment on Sept. 9 to outline three volunteer-run initiatives the group is carrying out countywide.
Brischette described the group's work to restart recycling collection after county services stopped following the pandemic, to organize an adopt-a-county-road program with several hundred volunteers, and to assist residents who cannot clean up waste in their yards because of disability, age or income. He said the group has coordinated with SilverSage (Meals on Wheels) to identify recipients who need yard cleanups and that volunteers have completed multiple yard-cleaning projects.
Brischette said the recycling effort is “paying for itself” and that the group must raise donations to rent dumpsters and equipment for yard cleanups. He also announced a volunteer appreciation event later this month at the Silver Sage cafeteria and left contact information (dontmakewastevendor@gmail.com) for council follow-up and coordination.
Council members thanked Brischette and invited further meetings with a council subgroup to plan potential cooperative projects.
