Operations update: mooring maintenance contracts, dredging, ramps and dock plans discussed

During the staff report, Curtis Ludwig outlined several operational projects affecting the mooring field and island waterways.

Mooring‑ball maintenance: The town proposed a contractor contract to perform semiannual inspections and maintenance of mooring balls and has increased fees to cover those costs. Ludwig said the RFP is being reviewed and will be sent for bid when procurement staff availability permits.

Coast Guard coordination and quota systems: Ludwig said staff is attempting to schedule a meeting with the Coast Guard sector to coordinate work on six mooring quota systems; the process has been slowed by federal staffing issues.

Dredging survey and appraisal: The committee asked for an update on surveying and appraising canals for potential dredging. Ludwig said the town is looking into it and staff will provide an update at the next meeting.

Infrastructure and dock work: Ludwig said the Myanmar ramp will be repaired and resurfaced with crushed rock until a permanent slab is installed. The Tropical Shores kayak dock is in FEMA review. The town recovered the stolen enforcement boat and will evaluate disposal or reuse options for two damaged sections of the old dinghy dock; one composite dock may be refurbished and installed at the Mound House to provide ferry layup capability.

Ludwig and others stressed that most items remain in the planning or procurement phase and that council approval, approvals from state/federal partners, or funding availability may be required before work proceeds.
