Anchorage committee hears mooring‑field rate increase as staff seeks to cover maintenance costs

The Anchorage Advisory Committee on Oct. 27 was told the town raised mooring‑field fees as part of the new budget to cover semiannual contractor maintenance of mooring balls. Harbormaster Curtis Ludwig said, “Our monthly rate has is now at $532.84, and our daily rate is now, $37 and $20.28 cents, and this is with tax included in these rates.”
Ludwig said the monthly rate represented the larger change and acknowledged pushback from some long‑term boaters. “My biggest concern is just losing our long time, boaters, that's been here for a while,” he said, adding staff expects the field to be competitive because of its protected location behind the barrier island and San Carlos.
Committee members asked Ludwig to confirm the prior rates and whether the new numbers include tax; Ludwig replied that previous monthly charges were about $436 (including tax) and that the daily rate previously was about $35 (plus tax) and that the new amounts reflect tax being included in the posted figure. Members also asked whether the increases had been discussed with boaters and reported follow‑up conversations between the vice mayor and residents after a recent town hall.
Committee discussion focused on the balance between covering maintenance costs and retaining the long‑term customer base that contributes predictable revenue. Ludwig said staff will continue outreach to rental companies and boaters and will monitor reservations going into the high season.
The report of the rate change came as part of the harbormaster's broader staff report on mooring‑field operations; committee members said they want additional information on financial sources and on how future changes would be communicated to the public.
