Supervisors push regional rail coordination, VDOT fixes and bridge priorities as Long Bridge work continues

Noel Dominguez of the Fairfax County Department of Transportation summarized a transportation priority in the county's draft package: expanding cross‑jurisdictional rail connections to link VRE and MARC as the Long Bridge project advances. "This just talks about us working with the Commonwealth District of Columbia and Maryland working collaboratively expanding cross jurisdictional rail connections such as linking VRE and Mark as the new Long Bridge becomes completed," Dominguez said.

Supervisors recommended strengthening the language to emphasize efficiency and reduced duplication across transit systems. Supervisor Alcorn suggested the package note the goal of working "more collaboratively and efficiently across the systems" and flagged the need to address VDOT approval processes that staff and builders find slow and inflexible. Multiple supervisors asked staff to include explicit support in the packet for the American Legion Bridge and South Side express‑lane priorities, noting these are longstanding board positions.

Staff said statewide transportation language on simplifying application and scoring processes will be updated to align with a triennial review now underway at the state level; the public comment period opened on the day of this meeting. Supervisors also asked staff to ensure the package emphasizes sufficient funding for all transit systems beyond commuter rail, including buses and connector services, to reflect rider needs and limited fiscal options for major expansions.

Staff committed to revising draft language to incorporate revisions on efficiency, VDOT coordination and bridge priorities and to return with updated text.
