Palm Beach school meeting erupts into free-speech debate after board member’s remarks about Charlie Kirk

A regular meeting of the Palm Beach County School Board in October became a sustained forum for debate over free speech after public commenters raised and replayed remarks attributed to board member Edwin Ferguson about the late conservative speaker Charlie Kirk.

The meeting, which included routine recognitions and committee reports, shifted to a prolonged public-comment period in which roughly 65 people addressed the board. Speakers included school employees, union representatives, clergy, civil-rights advocates and parents who either defended Ferguson’s right to speak or pressed for official condemnation and discipline for what many described as inflammatory language.

The issue drew recurring references to a September state Department of Education memorandum that warned district employees about certain political speech; several speakers said the memo had chilled teachers’ speech.
