Sheriff and fire chief report to council: arrests, DWI, bullet found in residence, water rescues and EV engine-fire contained

Representatives from the Anoka County Sheriffs Office and the East Bethel Fire Department updated the council on public-safety activity in September and early October.
The sheriffs office reported 389 calls for service in September, including seven thefts, 13 assault reports, 45 arrests and 179 traffic stops that produced 38 traffic citations. Deputies stopped a vehicle on Highway 65 after observing an expired registration; the driver initially provided a false identity and was later identified and arrested on three active felony warrants from other counties. Deputies located drug paraphernalia and an open container during an inventory search.
The sheriff's report also described a DWI arrest after a deputy stopped a vehicle for erratic driving; the driver failed standardized field sobriety tests, submitted to a preliminary breath test of 0.182 and provided an evidentiary breath sample of 0.16. The individual was booked for third-degree DWI.
Deputies responded to an address on the 24300 block of Highway 65 NE after a homeowner found an intact bullet and siding and drywall damage consistent with a projectile passing through exterior siding and interior walls. The Crime Scene Unit recovered the bullet and documented the scene; follow-up investigation is ongoing and deputies canvassed neighbors for information.
East Bethel Fire reported 75 calls for the period, including 39 medical calls, and said a newly implemented duty-crew model answered eight calls without triggering an all-call. The fire chief described an incident in which a hybrid vehicle experienced an engine compartment fire; duty-crew personnel limited the fire to the engine compartment and prevented it from reaching the vehicle battery, avoiding a more complex EV battery fire scenario. The department also assisted in water rescues on local lakes and operated the East Bethel fireboat during at least one rescue.
Fire and sheriff personnel urged residents to wear life jackets, share float plans, and exercise caution as temperatures fall. The fire chief also reminded residents to use reflective gear and inspect Halloween treats as trick-or-treating approaches.
No formal council action was taken; these were informational reports.
