Police and EMS report rising call volumes; traffic safety and training programs to restart

The City of Mayville Public Safety committee received monthly updates Tuesday from the police department and Emergency Medical Services, which both reported increased demand for services.
Police briefed the committee that officers responded to 511 calls for service since the previous meeting and that call volume is driving program changes. The department said a traffic safety program will restart next month and urged residents to follow winter parking and snowfall rules to support snow removal. The department also reported its drug‑drop initiative collected 84 pounds of unused or expired medications.
EMS told the committee it is about 125 calls ahead of last year and is expanding clinical capacity. Staff said the service finalized training with medical control on a newly adopted pain medication (named in the meeting) intended to reduce the need for paramedic intercepts. EMS also reported being featured in EMS Professional magazine for its training center, said it plans to submit a non‑state grant for a new building by Oct. 31, and described plans for additional EMT and AEMT classes to meet regional demand.
Both departments described staffing pressures and recruitment needs. EMS said it had hired a new instructor and is scheduling an additional EMT class next spring; police emphasized continuing demand on detectives and patrol staff.
The committee took no separate formal action on either report beyond receiving the updates.
