SALT LAKE CITY — The Business and Labor Interim Committee voted Oct. 15 to carry a draft bill intended to reduce hidden-fee advertising by requiring the advertised price for a product or service to show the total consumer price (excluding taxes when explicitly identified).
The proposed language directs the Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) to administer and enforce the chapter and grants DCP authority to impose administrative fines and seek court relief. Drafting attorney Tyler Moore told the committee the bill requires the advertised price to be the total price the consumer will pay, presented clearly and conspicuously; DCP staff said the language reflected a previously discussed committee consensus.
Committee action: Senator Weiler moved the draft as a committee bill. The committee approved the motion unanimously and asked staff to prepare the bill file for session consideration.
