San Joaquin County marks 175th anniversary with recognition for Escalon

San Joaquin County Board Chair Paul Canepa and Fifth District Supervisor Robert Rickman presented a certificate recognizing San Joaquin County’s 175th anniversary to the Escalon City Council during the Oct. meeting.
Canepa said the county is marking the anniversary with outreach across municipalities and credited small cities such as Escalon for sustaining the county’s agricultural economy. Philip Merlo, executive director of the San Joaquin County Historical Museum, and David Russell of the Escalon Historical Society described local history, including Escalon’s founding by farmers and the Valley Days program that brings third‑grade students to the museum.
Merlo traced the city’s origins to settlers who saw the area as a “stepping stone” between the mines and the coast and described the region’s role in California’s agricultural processing and small business economy.
The council accepted the county’s certificate and took photos with county representatives. No formal action or funding measure was associated with the presentation.
