Kent issues proclamations for Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Diwali; three neighborhood councils recognized

At its Oct. 21 meeting the Kent City Council issued two proclamations and recognized three new neighborhood councils.
Mayor Dana Ralph read a proclamation designating October 2025 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and invited Gina Finley of Dawn Domestic Abuse Women's Network to speak. Finley said Dawn operates a shelter in Kent and an advocacy center nearby and thanked the city for support that allows the organization to "serve over 2,000 people a year." She also told the council, "We answer over 400 calls every month," and asked for sustained funding and community support.
The council also read a proclamation recognizing Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas. Representatives of Hindu and Sikh community organizations accepted the proclamation and described local community service initiatives, including a food-donation campaign called Sewa Diwali; a representative said the campaign donated more than 700,000 pounds of food in 2024 as part of a national effort.
Finally, the council recognized three neighborhood councils'Meridian Ridge, Hunter Oaks and the Parks neighborhood'as part of the city's recognized neighborhood program. Tracy Taylor, the city's neighborhood program manager, said the program helps residents connect with city staff and build partnerships. Robert Edgmon, representing the Parks neighborhood, described the area as "probably the most diverse community I have ever been involved in" and thanked the city for the recognition.
