South Huntington board honored by students, receives awards and appoints ex‑officio student member

South Huntington Union Free School District’s Board of Education was honored Monday night as students from each of the district’s seven buildings presented remarks and gifts recognizing the board’s service.
At a special Board Recognition Night, elementary, middle and high school students delivered brief speeches and handed each board member a paw‑print memory box or other tokens of appreciation. ‘‘You help us believe in ourselves,’’ Birchwood fifth grader Julian Joyner told the board. ‘‘Thank you for everything you do to support us, cheer for us, and help us grow.’’ Julian identified his father, Sydney Joyner, as a board member during his remarks.
The recognition segment included remarks from principals and student leaders across the district. Oakwood second‑grader Harley Howard thanked board member Geraldine Clark for her ‘‘incredible dedication’’ and mentioned classroom programs including I‑Ready Math and the Oakwood theatre program. Stimson Middle School principal Mike Duggan and Whitman High School principal Dr. John Murphy praised board initiatives they said have supported facilities improvements, new labs and extracurricular programs.
The board accepted an award from the New York State School Boards Association recognizing Frederick Scragg for meeting the association’s Board of Excellence criteria. The board also voted to appoint Lucy Maniades, a senior at Walt Whitman High School, as the district’s ex‑officio student board member for the 2025–26 school year in accordance with Education Law §1702.
Representatives of district bargaining units and the South Huntington Council of PTAs thanked the board for partnership on projects including a renovated community walkway and a new concession stand for athletics. Several presenters referenced the upcoming homecoming weekend and other community events.
