Schools to follow Comptroller guidance on online fundraising after committee OKs policy language

The Rutherford County Schools Policy Committee approved an amendment to Policy 6.701 to address online fundraising and require schools to follow guidance from the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury on vendor splits and allowable fundraising arrangements.
Monica Ridley, general counsel, said the change was requested by accounting staff to reflect evolving comptroller guidance and differences among audit arrangements. She noted that some vendors or fundraising platforms are permitted in other nearby districts but not by the comptroller for county systems because of auditing rules. During discussion a committee member identified DonorsChoose as a popular platform that some nearby systems use but which Rutherford County staff said they cannot use under current comptroller guidance.
The language gives schools administrative direction to follow the comptroller's guidance on percentages that vendors may retain and requires adherence to auditing rules. The committee moved and approved the change by voice vote; no roll-call tally was recorded.
Staff said the policy aims to give principals and accounting staff clear direction and reduce confusion when vendors and audit rules differ across jurisdictions.
