VDOT reports routine maintenance; supervisors press for traffic device at school route and bridge updates

A VDOT representative briefed the board on recent maintenance: brush cutting on county secondary roads, ditch cleaning at several named locations, localized shoulder repairs and pipe/culvert work. VDOT said plant-mix paving for scheduled work had been completed and that contractors were authorized to begin secondary-route mowing and litter pickup starting Sept. 22, with a primary mow to follow in October.
Supervisors raised specific local concerns. One supervisor requested VDOT check eligibility for a traffic-control device at Route 698 (Academic Lane), citing heavy traffic from three schools, student drivers and pickup activity. The board also asked whether state troopers could be used for targeted enforcement near a frequently-accident bridge and requested VDOT bring the bridge procurement/project lead (Beau Hoyt) to speak with the board during the project planning phase. On Goldie's Mill dam, the VDOT representative said the Department of Wildlife Resources had a permit to maintain the dam and was conducting interim repairs; VDOT said it expected public meetings but could not speak for the resource agency's long-term plans.
VDOT said final staffing changes at the district level had occurred, naming Greg Hennion as the new Fredericksburg district engineer. Supervisors asked for follow-up on clogging ditches on Light Street and said they would provide locations for Johnson-grass spraying on state right-of-way. VDOT said it has an ongoing Johnson-grass spray program and would research any standing county committee on the issue.
