Attorney Keith told the committee that the Act signed on March 28, 2025 extended COVID‑era remote‑meeting provisions and removed strict in‑person quorum requirements for some meetings. The draft policy separates full‑committee rules from subcommittee rules: it would keep stricter in‑person quorum expectations for full school‑committee meetings (with limited, emergency exceptions) while giving subcommittee chairs discretion to allow members to participate remotely, provided the public has adequate access to the meeting.
Committee members voiced differing views. Some said in‑person attendance improves deliberation and public confidence; others said the flexibility is needed to avoid canceled subcommittee meetings when members cannot attend. One member urged changing the practice from seeking chair permission to requiring notification to the chair when a member intends to join remotely.
After discussion the subcommittee voted to present the revised policy to the full committee for consideration.
