Parma board debate raises transparency and political-content questions over sponsorships and a withheld consultant report

Trustees spent part of the Oct. 9 meeting discussing two governance issues: one involved athletic advertising and sponsorships, and the other concerned access to a third-party operational review the superintendent said he had commissioned.

Advertising and sponsorships: Trustees debated Resolution 2025-10-453, authorizing advertising sponsorships for district athletic programs, after several trustees and community members said checks had been collected and items printed before the board had the opportunity to review and approve sponsor language. One trustee described a prior run of t-shirts and banners that had already been printed; other trustees raised concerns about political or partisan language appearing on sponsor materials. The board approved the sponsorship authorization by roll call and directed administration to provide sponsorship contracts, final proofs and any sample language to the board before printing or accepting payments in future campaigns.

Third-party operational review (consultant report): Several trustees requested a copy of a third-party consultant report the superintendent said he had commissioned to identify cost-savings and operational recommendations. Trustees argued the document belongs to the district and should be shared with elected board members and not held until administration's internal vetting is complete. Superintendent S.J. Hunt replied the report will be presented to the board after senior leadership has reviewed and vetted recommendations, but trustees pressed for earlier access to the data so they could review and prepare questions. One trustee recorded a direct request that the superintendent provide the report to trustees prior to the presentation. The superintendent said he would present a vetted set of recommendations and allow questions at the next meeting.

Why this matters: The two debates touch on standard public-school governance issues: (1) making sure fundraising and vendor agreements follow board policies and are routed to the board before public-facing materials are produced, and (2) ensuring elected trustees have timely access to consultant reports paid for with district funds. Trustees said public confidence and good governance require transparent processes.
