The town manager reported a pre-donation deficit of $36,007.25 in the town's working reconciliation; staff said acceptance of the donations and a $4,300 appropriation would reduce the shortfall to about $3,400. "The deficit of $36,007.25 was helped considerable by the donation we accepted today," the town manager said, adding that a $4,300 appropriation still needs to be transferred and that final closing entries and prior-year carryovers must be reconciled before the town can present a definitive number.
Officials said the discrepancy appears to stem largely from timing and posting differences across years and accounts, carryover entries and how donations have historically been recorded. Town staff reported they had received adjusting journal entries from the auditor and were continuing to reconcile bank balances and receipts, including a balance held at Winthrop Federal Credit Union linked to LAAD.
Board members also discussed two program-level items brought forward by LAAD: a request to purchase a memorial bench for the tennis courts (estimated $800'1,200) and a potential requirement to install perimeter fencing to meet child-care licensing or insurance conditions. Staff advised that spending from LAAD's reserve/savings account may be appropriate for program improvements but that the reconciliation must be completed first and that any withdrawals may require a formal select-board motion and documentation.
Ending: The board accepted the donations and directed staff to complete a reconciliation of LAAD accounts, obtain required supporting documentation from the credit union, and report back with precise balances and any recommended town-meeting or warrant actions to resolve legacy differences.
